The National Road Safety Authority, (NRSA) says it will not relent on its oars in ensuring that roads across the country are safe before, during and after the upcoming December 7, 2024 general elections.

The period leading to general elections in Ghana have in the past witnessed some road crashes resulting in fatalities as politicians traverse the country to campaign for their parties and candidates.

In the run-up to the December 2020 elections, some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress were involved in an accident when they were travelling to Ejura in the Ashanti Region for a constituency rally, resulting in some deaths while a number of the NDC members and supporters including the Branch Chairman had their legs and arms amputated.

Speaking to Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang, Host of New York-based Adinkra Radio Morning show, the Public Relations Officer of the NRSA, Pearl Adusu Sateckla sad her outfit is poised to ensure that no lives are lost through road crashes during the elections.

“We will not relax taking into consideration that this year is an election year. We will embark on massive road safety campaigns including having media engagements ahead of the elections. Our presence will also be felt on the roads to ensure that drivers do the right thing while embarking on their campaigns. We have to ensure that the gains that we’ve had since 2022 we sustain them.

“We will meet with politicians’ to educate them on how to ensure road safety. The police will also deploy cameras to detect wrongs on the road to ensure the roads are safe. We will require adequate resources to be able to achieve this.” she said.

Asked whether roads in Ghana are safe, Pearl Adusu Sateckla responded in the affirmative, but added a lot depends on drivers who are key stakeholders to make the road safe.
