2024 Election: NPP will hand over power when defeated – Henry Quartey

Henry Quartey, the minister of the interior, has reaffirmed the resolve of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to preserve democratic values in the case of an electoral setback.

President Akufo-Addo’s recent comments, which cast doubt on the ability of the current administration to transfer power peacefully in the event that they lose the elections scheduled for December 7, prompted the opposition’s fears.

In a news conference, Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, expressed similar worries and urged the NPP to put the stability of the country first by prioritizing a seamless transition.

In response, on Wednesday, May 15, Minister Henry Quartey spoke to the media in Accra and reassured the people of the NPP’s steadfast commitment to guaranteeing a peaceful election process.

He emphasised that regardless of the election outcome, the NPP is committed to upholding democratic norms and facilitating a peaceful transfer of power, in line with Ghana’s democratic principles.

Mr Quartey’s statement has allayed fears and underscored the party’s commitment to a democratic transition, emphasising the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the country.

“As a politician, as a political party, it is our hope, it is our wish, it is our belief that by the grace of God, the good people of this country, the good work that we have done in infrastructure and in other interventions, they will give us another mandate.

“Perish the thought, and I say again, perish the thought, If they decide to give their mandate to somebody, we will handover peacefully and walk away, go to the drawing board and come back Insha Allah. But I know that the grace of God abounds and so we shall break the 8,” he said.
