The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin says he cannot declare the Assin North Parliamentary seat vacant.

This is in response to a letter written to Parliament by the Registrar of the General Jurisdiction Division of the Law Court Complex in Accra after a high court in Cape Coast annulled the 2020 parliamentary election Assin North.

The court held that the MP James Quayson, owed allegiance to Canada at the time of filing to contest the polls.

But the Speaker in a letter to the Registrar of the General Jurisdiction Division of the Law Court Complex signed by the Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Nsiah said prior to receiving the Registrar’s letter, he had received certified true copies of documents from the lawyers of James Quayson, indicating that they had filed an appeal against the judgment of the High Court in Cape Coast.

To this end, the speaker said the matter has not concluded since it is still pending in court and can, therefore, not declare the Assin North seat vacant.
