I’m in the music industry to be the first of me, not a copy of any artiste – Mandem Yopic

Hiplife musician Mandem Yopic, known in private life as Andrew Yaw Kwarteng, has stated categorically that he aims not to be the second version of any musician as he advances in the music industry.

According to the fast-rising artist, who is also a professional Immigration Officer, he desires to stand out with a unique identity rather than follow in the footsteps or mold of another artist, no matter how successful they may be.

This is a common sentiment among artists who wish to define their own legacy instead of being viewed as a replica or derivative of someone else.

The Sefwi-born musician made these remarks in an interview on Adinkra Radio’s podcast show Vibe with Lady JayJay.

“I am not in the music industry to be second to anybody. I am here to be the first of me. I don’t have a particular artiste I strive to be like. I take the positives from the lives of many people in many fields, not only in music. Whoever I meet, and I realize their life can have a positive impact on mine, I learn from them,” he said.

Mandem Yopic further stated that his hit song Onyame Mmo has no restrictions in terms of where it can be played—it’s suitable for every venue, including both discos and churches.

“The song was made for everybody. It can be played everywhere, including discos and churches. People should forget about the one carrying the message and focus on the message itself. If you listen to the lyrics, I’m telling you that whatever situation you find yourself in, the Lord is with you and will not forsake you. I am also saying that the Lord is with me, so I fear not. This song, no matter where it’s played—whether disco or church—the lyrics will speak to you in many ways. Everybody likes the song, including Kweku Bonsam.”
