Fare increment: We dare Police to arrest any driver – Concerned Drivers Assoc.

The Concerned Drivers Association has dared the Police to arrest any driver who has increased transport fares, serving notice they will resist any such move.

The Ministry of Transport has directed the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to lookout for transport operators charging fares above the approved ones.

In a statement signed by its Public Relations Unit and released in Accra on Sunday, April 14, 2024, the Ministry said negotiations for a new public transport fares are still ongoing with the Road Transport Operators following the recent increase in fuel prices and other related operational cost.

The Ministry urged the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to be on the lookout for any driver who goes contrary to the directive issued by the GPRTU and GRTCC.

But speaking in an interview on New York-based Adinkra Radio, the National Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association, Paa Willie, called the bluff of the Transport Ministry to cause the arrest of drivers.

“Since the Ministry issued the statement three days ago, have you heard that any driver has been arrested? The government is increasing fuel prices and taxes but drivers should not increase transport fares? If they want to effect arrest, they should first go to the port and then to Abossey Okae and then move to the filling stations before they can arrest drivers. Nobody can arrest drivers. We have increased transport fares by 20% and we stand by that. Nothing is going to change our decision. The government has not bought a car for any driver to use, we’ve bought our cars and we maintain it ourselves.”

If one driver is arrested, we will embark on a sit down strike. Some people went to our office to hunt our PRO, and they were nearly beaten by the drivers. We are serious about what we are doing and no amount of intimidation can cow us into submission,” he told Morning Show host, Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang.
